Come Dine With Me

A couple of months ago, our small circle of friends decided to recreate the popular Come Dine with Me TV show and take turns serving a lavish meal with all the trimmings. We were the second couple in the line-up and yesterday evening was our night to pull out the stops and play ‘hostess with the mostest’.

The first Couples Come Dine With Me had been hosted the month before by my sister and brother in-law and they had done a fantastic job of serving a grilled prawn starter, roast lamb for the main and a beautiful trio of desserts that included the most amazing baked cheesecake and homemade ice-cream. Their dinner party game, which involved picking up a box from the floor using only your mouth, had everyone in stitches (figuratively but very nearly literally too!) so the competition was tough.

BD and I decided on a menu that would allow us to do most of the prep in advance thereby allowing us to relax with our guests and not spend all night in the kitchen. I enjoy cooking and I love sitting down to a meal with family and friends but I’m not one for spending endless hours preparing a meal. My time is better spent enjoying the company and eating the food! So I always look for delicious meals that are not too technical or time consuming.

BD has a certain skill when it comes to cooking steak so that was our choice for the main. It’s one of the few things he can cook besides frying an egg or pancakes. Hey I’m not complaining just explaining our combined skills in the kitchen 🙂

I also ALWAYS adapt recipes to suit the ingredients I have in my fridge or the ingredients I’d prefer to eat so the links to my recipes are only a guideline.

Come Dine with Me Menu:

Roasted cherry tomatoes, brie and pancetta phyllo cups with roasted red pepper soup

Grilled fillet with blue cheese butter
Garlic infused portabello mushrooms with balsamic
Rocket, butternut and beetroot salad

Molten cocolate soufflé and vanilla ice cream

BD made the most amazing Strawberry Mojito’s which we sipped while watching the sunset from our balcony and enjoying the warm Spring air. I think these had everyone feeling relaxed pretty quickly.

Later we played a fun question game that I had composed earlier in the day by writing a bunch of funny, random questions on separate pieces of paper and putting them in a bag. Everyone took a turn to pull out a question and while they wrote their answer on a small blackboard the rest of us had to guess what we thought their answer would be which resulted in a lot of humorous debates.

All in all it was lovely evening and I’m glad I went for a menu that didn’t have me sweating it out in the kitchen all night. The food was delicious and our guests were very complimentary. Although that may have been influenced by the mojitos and red wine! 😉

The Bug

The name Bug came about not long after our daughter was born because she would regularly wake up throughout the night moaning and groaning like something was bugging her. Baby Daddy would talk to her in his loving daddy voice “What’s the matter bug?”

We soon realised it was tummy issues. I breastfed for an entire year and tried everything from changing my diet to demand feeding to not demand feeding, to supplementing with goats milk, soy milk, rice milk in an attempt to ease her tummy but nothing made much difference. She has slept through the night in her own bed exactly 4 times since she was born.

Yes I tried a number of those sleeping methods and maybe they would have worked if I had stuck it out like they insist you do, but my child’s screams tore at my heart and she inevitably ended up back in our bed attached to my boob. Now that she can walk she still makes her own way to our bed every night to claim her space in between us.

Having just turned 3 she has mostly outgrown the tummy issues except for the fact that she is fully potty trained but refuses to poop in the toilet or a potty. She will very politely ask me to put a nappy on, then go to her room and close the door while she does her business. When she’s done I get told “mommy change my stinky bum!”

She is a very smart, beautiful child with a very sensitive yet moody nature. Sometimes she says things or observes things that would have be believe she was a 5 year old. Every day I see behaviour in her that reminds me of my childhood and I want to keep in touch with those memories so that I can empathise and assure her that I will always be there to guide her through life.

Personally I believe your parenting style needs to suit your child and your family’s needs. If I had more than one child I’m sure I would have adapted my approach. I also believe it’s important to listen to your child and hone in on your motherly instincts. The best advice I found was from Dr Sears.  His approach to a high maintenance baby really resonated with me and boosted my confidence as a parent.

Time for change

The past few weeks have been a particularly trying time for me. After 8 months of being in business with my Baby Daddy, I think my body finally succumbed to the stress of it all and I felt like I had reached breaking point.

Everything we talk about is either work or money related. At home we don’t switch off and take time out to act like a newly married couple or let alone a couple!

After nearly 6 months of marriage we have spent very little quality time together. It doesn’t help that I have a high maintenance 3 year old that somehow finds her into way to our bed every night.

Look I love my daughter and I wouldn’t change her for the world, well maybe just to make her sleep more, listen more, eat more and brush her teeth more… Ok, I know I have to accept that somethings are beyond my control!

Ok so lately I’ve been feeling depressed, lethargic and unmotivated to get out of bed in the morning. Worst of all I’ve been allowing myself to wallow in it – far longer than any grown women should allow herself to. And with my history of depression,  I know how quickly these emotions can snowball into ugly situations that affect everyone around me. It’s time to put on my big girl panties and make a few changes instead of trying to find someone or something to blame. Usually that falls on my poor husband!

So I had the idea to start this blog as a place for me to unwind, off load, bitch and moan but ultimately it’s a place for me to reflect and document life’s challenges that will motivate me to be a better person.

I also want to do more of the things that I enjoy, one of them being writing, which I believe will give me a sense of purpose other than being a mom, a wife and a business partner.

So here we go. I hope you stick around for this roller coaster ride that is my life!
